I first learned to use it in when our office went from drawing board to computer. Since Quark is all I’ve ever used, I love what it can do. The software developers have changed things that didn’t need changing, and I’ve had to hunt for tools that have always been in one place. That’s irritating.

They also added abilities to an existing tool that could have been a tool of its own. That’s confusing. All in all, I have always loved Quark. I couldn’t dream of changing to a different word management software. I cannot get the Quark 10 to work on my computer.

All I had to do to install this was to enter the validation code – no name, password, etc. I thought this was all I had to do to install the Quark I do not understand why a simple installation process that was available on the 6. Quark vs. I switched to from Quark to Adobe InDesign for about 9 months so I could work with clients who have made that switch.

It was relatively easy to design a book in InDesign, which I did, but when it came to complicated procedures, I switched back to Quark. And I love it all over again. Something as simple as as a drop shadow — takes 3 seconds in Quark — is exasperatingly complex in InDesign. Just like InDesign lets you work with ten-thousandths of an inch. How often do we need that level of precision? The thing I love about Adobe is their great Classroom in a Book series of tutorials.

It taught me everything about how to design layouts. Quark, on the other hand, has published limited documentation that is not quite satisfying.

So now I’m stuck between two worlds. For most of my jobs, Quark is the fastest. Problem is so few people use Quark that I can’t get graphics departments to even buy a copy so we can all work in both programs. Both programs work well, but Adobe Indesign has more expensive extras – like you can buy the whole graphics suite. But will you really be able to sink the hours into it? I’ll just take Quark and Photoshop and be happy.

I’ve been a Quark Xpress fan for many years because it is so intuitive, easy to use, etc. But Quark 10 has lots of problems! The pdf ads I have to put into a magazine I’m doing come out weird when I import them. And 10 is SLOW. What’s going on? I’ve used Quark for over 20 years and always preferred it’s speed and general slickness to InDesign. Until now. I would recommend nobody to buy this version, it is utter rubbish.

If you have 9 – stay with that but don’t upgrade to Yosemite unless you have 9. If you’ve upgraded to Yosemite then I would recommend you start learning Indesign. How they can release this as a ‘pro’ piece of software is beyond me. It is SLOW. Like you’re running on an early 90’s Mac. I have a kick ass machine btw. Crashes, hangs, fails to pdf etc etc etc. My Quark rescue folder is full of of docs that have crashed in I used to get one or two a month in version 9. If you buy this software without testing it as I stupidly did then more fool you.
