As part of the effort to continually improve Microsoft software, updates and fixes are created and released for recognized issues. Many of these fixes are regularly combined into a single package called a service pack that is made available for installation.

Both the Mainstream Support and Extended Support phases for software require a product’s supported service pack to be installed to continue to receive full support including security and DST updates. When a new service pack is released, Microsoft provides either 12 or 24 months of support for the previous service pack, varying according to the product family for example, Windows, Office, Servers, or Developer tools.

When support for a service pack ends, Microsoft no longer provides new security updates, DST updates, or other non-security updates for that service pack.

Commercially reasonable support will continue to be available, as described in the following. When support for a product ends, support of all the service packs for that product also ends. The product’s lifecycle supersedes the service pack policy. Microsoft publishes specific support timelines for a previous service pack when the new service pack is released.

Customers are highly encouraged to stay on a fully supported service pack to ensure they are on the latest and most secure version of their product.

For customers on supported products with service pack versions that have left full support, Microsoft offers commercially reasonable support as follows:. Commercially reasonable support incidents will be provided through Microsoft Customer Service and Support and Microsoft managed support offerings such as Premier Support. If the support incident requires escalation to development for further guidance, requires a non-security update, or requires a security update, customers will be asked to upgrade to a fully supported service pack.

Commercially reasonable support does not include an option to engage Microsoft product development resources; technical workarounds may be limited or not possible. A matrix of the Microsoft product families and the duration of service pack support for each product family is as follows. Microsoft recommends that you apply the latest Cumulative Update or one released in the last year for the corresponding release.

The support team might require you to apply a specific Cumulative Update that addresses a specific problem when troubleshooting an issue. This support policy permits customers to receive existing non-security updates or to request new non-security updates for the fully supported service packs during the Mainstream Support phase. Minimal hybrid migration is great for organizations that need to take more time to migrate their mailboxes to Microsoft , but still plan to complete the migration within a few weeks.

You get some of the benefits of the more advanced full-hybrid migration without much of the complexity. You can control how many and which mailboxes to migrate at a given time. Microsoft mailboxes will be created with the user names and passwords of the on-premises accounts. And, unlike cutover migrations, your users don’t have to recreate their Outlook profiles.

In a full hybrid migration, you have many hundreds, up to tens of thousands, of mailboxes, and you move some or all to Microsoft Because these migrations are typically longer-term, hybrid migrations make it possible to:.

Full hybrid migrations are best for organizations that expect to stay in a hybrid configuration for many months or more. You get the features listed earlier in this section, plus directory synchronization, better integrated compliance features, and the ability to move mailboxes to and from Microsoft using online mailbox moves.

Microsoft becomes an extension of your on-premises organization. If your organization chooses to migrate mailboxes to Microsoft but plans to keep Azure AD Connect to manage user accounts in Active Directory, you need to keep at least one Exchange server on-premises.

If all Exchange servers are removed, you won’t be able to make changes to Exchange recipients. This is because the source of authority is Active Directory and changes need to be made there. We strongly believe that you get the best value and user experience by migrating fully to Microsoft But we understand that some organizations need to keep some Exchange servers on-premises.

This might be because of regulatory requirements, to guarantee data isn’t stored in a foreign datacenter, because you have unique settings or requirements that can’t be met in the cloud, or because you need Exchange to manage cloud mailboxes because you still use Active Directory on-premises.

In any case, if you keep Exchange on-premises, you should ensure your Exchange environment is upgraded. For the best experience, we recommend that you upgrade your remaining on-premises environment to Exchange You don’t need to install Exchange Server because you can go directly from Exchange Server to Exchange Server Exchange most closely matches the experience available with Microsoft , although some features are available only in Microsoft Exchange – April April is a lot closer than you think!

Migration path to Exchange The migration path from Exchange to a newer version is simple: Install Exchange into your existing Exchange organization. Move services and data from Exchange to Exchange and decommission Exchange servers. Server hardware Server hardware requirements have changed from Exchange Make sure your hardware is compatible. Find out more about hardware requirements here: Exchange system requirements With the significant improvements in Exchange performance and the increased computing power and storage capacity in newer servers, you’ll likely need fewer servers to support the same number of mailboxes.

Operating system version The minimum supported operating system version for Exchange is Windows Server Search by Product Find Lifecycle Policy information about a product.
