Yes – I know – it’s a Dell support issue I talked to one useless contact at Dell so far who advised to download it from Microsoft and use the Dell key customer has the valid original key card.

Apparently they will not, under any circumstances, provide Office OEM media. MS has both a trial download and a ‘backup download.

In searching on this issue I find others in the same situation. In the end I’ll probably have to escalate this and fight it out with Dell, but if anyone else has solved this problem I would appreciate your information. This thread is locked. As I understand it, Dell is in violation of their OEM agreement with Microsoft by refusing to provide a way to reinstall the software. I’m going to pursue some complaints on that basis also, not that either company will care in the slightest.

I may also demand a refund from Dell to my customer and advise him to put that toward a retail purchase or better yet, keep it and let me install Open Office. I’ve been involved with PCs since the beginning and I remember when we forced companies like Lotus to drop their hairbrained copy protection schemes that caused constant problems and made it near impossible to reinstall software.
